Jethro Tull
Cologne, Germany - Tanzbrunnen 12.7.97
by me

Another must for me, as I live in Cologne and a lot of friends from all over germany wanted to come to this show ( there was one guy that slept in my kitchen at the end ...). The concerts in Cologne are always a fan-meeting, as there are usually fans from all over europe there, so this promised to be a nice evening. The support band 'Too Late' was pretty good, instead I didn't listen too much to them, I just had to take an hour off at the bar, as I passed out flyers for the german fan-club before the concert, standing -dressed in black- in the sun, which made me a bit thirsty ... The Tull show started as usual with 'Song For Jeffrey' and 'Aqualung' and I noticed that this would be one of the better shows ... Ian was in really good shape, his voice was like what I expect from a 50 years old and it seemed that the whole band really had a lot of fun. There were a lot of people (about 5000 plus some other 1000 behind the curtain), good sunny wheather and the 'Tanzbrunnen' is a beautiful place. I saw Tull there in 1993 and that was very impressive.
The setlist has been changed again to earlier concerts, they didn't play 'Up The Pool' (I've seen this twice, but NEVER in germany so far :((( ...), 'Acres Wild', 'Pussy Willow' and the 'Teacher'-Medley, but 'The Whistler',  'My God' and 'Farm On The Freeway'. Ian did some good jokes and talked much to the audience.

BTW, The Tanzbrunnen is directly at the banks of the rhine, while on the other side of the river there was a Liza Minelli concert at the same time. I wonder, if you were in the middle, on the rhine on a ship, what a sound that would have been ...Tull were in the same hotel than Liza, but as far as I know they did no session ...

I just read the critics in the newspapers today, they were all pretty fair (that's not usual) and good: ' ... Anderson's voice was smooth and powerful like all the years before ...'
After the show we had a little fan-party which didn't turned out as big as we expected (the bloody english guys didn't come to cologne ;)..) and also met some St. Clevers from the Netherlands. Thanks for being there, I hope you enjoyed !
