"I don't know why, but even as the opening video intro began to play, I just knew this was going to be something Special"
"What followed over the next couple of hours was yet another meticulously crafted, brilliantly conceived and perfectly presented show. How could I ever have doubted it?"
"It had been well documented that the show would feature "virtual" guests, but I had not expected them to feature so extensively throughout."
"I think the balance of old and new was just about right, and although it's hard to make a judgement on just one (or two) live performances, the new songs sounded great."
"and the songs are introduced, or rather preceded by recitatives on-screen from the various characters. These brief snippets didn't really work for me"
"As a story the show is hard to follow, partly because the songs are rather shoe-horned in to fit rather than being explicitly relevant, and partly because it's impossible to clearly hear most of the new lyrics."
"Of course Ian is not the great singer he once was, but although there were still signs of straining here and there he is managing it well, particularly on the quieter pieces like Jack in the Green, Weathercock and the beautiful Requiem. And his flute playing of course is still a wonder to behold.
Florian's guitar playing is the best I've heard since he joined the band,"
"Much as I loved the show, I can understand why there has already been a mixed reaction. It is not a Jethro Tull concert and - horror! - there's a GIRL singing Jethro Tull songs!!"
"Consider the (his) options. Go out on another tour playing "best of" Jethro Tull, with the current band, playing as Jethro Tull (he has every right to do so), or spend months planning and filming, re-arranging old material and writing new songs, utilising different singers in order to enhance the performance and to find a way to deliver something completely new and unexpected to his audience. Ian has certainly not taken the easy option and I don't understand why he would be criticised for, yet again, going out on a limb instead of just raking in easy money."
"The show, as with everything, was not absolutely perfect, and despite my enjoyment I do have a few slight reservations. Sharing vocals with Ryan and Unnur (or whoever) is definitely the way forward, both in terms of Ian being able to get through an individual show and, perhaps more importantly, probably ensuring he can go on for a few or even many years yet to come. That said, is it right for so much to be pre-recorded instead of using live performers? I think years ago I might have been horrified but I'm not too concerned right now...and I don't know why! In some ways it feels like cheating, but on the other hand it is a means to an end, and the end product is excellent. The debate will rage throughout the tour methinks...
My other slight gripe is that I would have preferred The Rock Opera to have been a completely new, stand alone project, preceded by an album of all new material, or at least substantially more new songs. But maybe that's just me being greedy?"
